Fans are listening to music more than ever
The IFPI 2022 report, “Engaging with Music, reveals an increase in music listening time, as the weekly average is now 20.1 hours compared to the average of 18.4 hours in 2021. Fans are listening more and more to music. A couple of other notable findings: More than 45% of music listeners choose a paid subscription service as their primary listening source. Unauthorized access to unlicensed music is still a thing as one in three survey respondents uses such methods for music listening. (Link)
Sped-up TikTok songs are creeping into the mainstream
Sped- and pitched-up songs have been circulating through the increasingly popular platform, TikTok, with great success. Songs are being increased in speed and pitch from anywhere between 30-50%. Fans are fueling the demand for these hyped, fast and high-pitched versions, resulting in mainstream artists releasing official sped-up versions of their own songs to streaming services. 3LAU $11 million NFT sale royalty disprute
3LAU has been active in the use of NFTs within the music industry. His Ultraviolet NFT offering was a huge success, bringing in over $11 million. Now, he’s facing a lawsuit from his collaborator on “Walk Away”, Luna Aura, claiming she is owed a 50% royalty share of the NFT proceeds pertaining to that track, and not the $25K lump sum offer from 3LAU’s. team. 3LAU’s team has responded to the suit and has denied any wrongdoing.
